A film that is currently in production is getting slammed by naysayers because one of the leading ladies is basically too good-looking.
Actress Syndey Sweeney is being accused of encouraging the “male gaze.”
The Emmy-nominee actress is starring in a new movie for Sony Pictures that is based on a Jane Fonda 1968 classic movie.
The movie is called Barbarella and it was about a space hero Barbarella – played by a very sensual Fonda – who takes out monsters and aliens. The movie shot Fonda to become a sexy symbol of the 60s.
Sweeney, from The White Lotus and Euphoria, is expected to be the star. Variety magazine has called her a “90s-throwback magazine queen, channeling the glory days of Cosmo cover girls.”
When Variety basically asked Sweeney if she was too good-looking for the upcoming Barbarella film, she issued a resounding no.
“I find power in my femininity,” Sweeney says. “I use my brain, and I use everything that I’m learning every single day in this industry as my power.”
The upcoming film has already got the feminists up in arms, including Fonda, who wants a word with Sweeny.
“I try not to [think about it],” Fonda said. “Because I worry about what it’s going to be.”
Of course, she is; she’s about to be outshined and is using feminism as an excuse.
Sweeney is no stranger to this controversy and defended her role in the HBO series Euphoria.
“You have me, you have [Zendaya], you have all of these very strongminded, independent women. If we didn’t feel comfortable with something, or we saw something we didn’t like, we’d all speak up,” Sweeney told Variety when questioned about the nature of the show.
She added, “It’s hard to see someone completely trashed by the public and the media when no one’s actually there. We are there, and clearly we’re still working on the show, and we’re still supportive.”
Sweeney is no stranger to controversy.
In August of 2022, she took heat on social media because during her mother’s 60th birthday party, members of the Idaho natives family were wearing MAGA parody hats that said, “Make Sixty Great Again.” The Emmy-nominated actress was accused of being closely associated with former President Donald Trump.
So there you have it, she’s pretty, she’s staring in a movie that made Fonda an icon, she’s from Idaho, and her family has a sense of humor.
Of course, some would try to cancel her.
