Daily Show Interviews Focus Group

We are going to dive into a fascinating recent occurrence involving a popular television program in liberal circles called The Daily Show. One of their reporters, Josh Johnson, found himself taken aback while engaging with a group of black voters in New York, asking who they intended to support in the upcoming 2024 presidential election. The reaction was unexpected and enlightening.

You might be wondering what caused Johnson’s surprise. It was the fact that the group was evenly divided in their support for current President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. Half and half, in fact. One voter, Darryl, even admitted, “Do I have to say his name? I don’t want to, but more than likely it’s going to be Trump.”

Further conversation revealed that out of the six panelists, three were pro-Biden, and three were pro-Trump. Certainly not what Johnson had anticipated. He responded, “Okay, so, we’re an even split. Which — yeah, I didn’t see that coming.”

It’s worth noting a recent poll indicated a notable increase in Trump’s support among black voters – from 4 percent to 23 percent. Why? Darryl, a lifelong Democrat, expressed disappointment with the party, saying, “For the most part, with the Democratic Party, they always make a bunch of promises that they can’t deliver.” Erica, another Trump supporter, echoed this, saying the Democratic Party often makes promises to the black community for votes, then neglects them after the ballots are cast.

One panelist supporting Biden commented, “I am not a huge fan of Trump, he doesn’t respect the black person.” This sparked a counter from Erica, who argued, “And Biden does? Has Biden issued an apology for the things that he’s been caught saying?”

The conversation didn’t stop there. Johnson presented each panelist with two symbols: a raised fist to indicate support and a middle finger for disapproval. He then played clips of Trump speaking, and the panelists’ reactions mirrored their divided voting intentions.

In one clip, Trump stated, “These lights are so bright in my eyes that I can’t see too many people out there, but I can only see the black ones, I can’t see any white ones. That’s how far I’ve come!” The reaction? Trump supporters raised their fists in approval, while Biden supporters offered disapproval.

Even when questioned if further charges against Trump might sway their votes, Erica, a Trump-leaning voter, remained firm, advising, “You pay attention, you listen to the facts, not the fluff.”

What’s the takeaway from this? Johnson’s realization: “I definitely did not sit down with this panel to change any minds, and I clearly have not.”
