Can Istanbul Talks Bridge Divides Between Russia and Ukraine?

Russia continues capturing Ukrainian territory while pretending to show up for “peace” talks—with Trump somehow taking credit for the whole charade.

Russia’s Two-Faced “Peace” Strategy

While the diplomats talk peace in Turkey, Russia’s military has been busy capturing more Ukrainian territory. Russian forces have advanced in eastern Ukraine, taking control of settlements including Kotlyarivka, Myrolyubivka, and Mykhailovka, bringing them closer to the regional border between Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk. Meanwhile, Ukrainian military intelligence reports that Russia is positioning troops for yet another offensive. This perfectly encapsulates Putin’s version of “peace negotiations” – grab as much land as possible while pretending to be interested in ending the conflict.

Of course, Putin didn’t even bother showing up to the talks he proposed, sending lower-level representatives instead. Zelenskyy was wise enough to see through this farce, stating: “If Putin does not show up – if this is another game – it will clearly demonstrate that Russia is not ready to end the war.” The Ukrainian president’s words highlight what anyone with common sense already knows – Russia has zero intention of achieving actual peace while they’re still capable of seizing more territory.

Trump Takes Credit While Putin Makes Demands

In typical fashion, former President Trump has inserted himself into the diplomatic chaos, declaring: “I insisted that that meeting take place and it is taking place.” He called for a 30-day ceasefire, which Zelenskyy and European leaders supported. Russia, however, proposed peace talks without a ceasefire, citing alleged Ukrainian violations of previous agreements. It’s fascinating how Russia always manages to play the victim while literally invading another country and killing civilians.

Putin’s so-called peace proposal comes with the same ridiculous conditions he’s been demanding since the beginning – the “denazification” of Ukraine (because apparently a country with a Jewish president is somehow Nazi Germany 2.0) and absolutely no territorial concessions. Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister even suggested negotiations shouldn’t exceed the 2022 Istanbul proposals, which Ukraine rightfully rejected. Putin’s language ahead of the talks remained confrontational, blaming Kyiv and its allies for the conflict he started.

Global Response to Russia’s Aggression

While Putin plays games with peace talks, the international community continues tightening the screws. Western leaders announced a tribunal for Russian war crimes in Ukraine and are holding Russia accountable for the 2014 downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17. The European Union agreed on its 17th sanctions package against Russia, targeting oil export evasion schemes, with plans for an 18th package already in the works. Poland has closed Russia’s consulate in Krakow after linking a fire to Russian sabotage.

“We are not ruling out that during these talks we will be able to agree on some new ceasefire, a new truce” – Putin

Interestingly, China reportedly supported Ukraine’s call for a ceasefire, potentially putting pressure on Putin to pursue peace. This development, if true, represents one of the few glimmers of hope in an otherwise bleak diplomatic landscape. But let’s not kid ourselves – as long as Putin believes he can continue taking Ukrainian territory, these “peace talks” are nothing more than a cynical performance designed to make Russia appear reasonable while they continue their illegal land grab and deliberate targeting of civilians.
