First Class Luxury While Economy Passengers Are Packed Like Sardines
While the average American family can barely afford groceries and gas thanks to Bidenomics, American Airlines is rolling out private luxury suites for the wealthy elite. The airline announced its new “Flagship Suite” seats featuring sliding privacy doors and chaise lounge-style seating on select Boeing 787-9 aircraft. These floating palaces in the sky offer wireless charging pads and generous personal storage space – amenities that seem almost comically extravagant while regular passengers in economy continue to have their knees crushed by ever-shrinking seat pitch.

“Every aspect of our new 787-9 is designed to feel premium in nature” – Heather Garboden, American’s Chief Customer Officer
The airline’s timing couldn’t be more tone-deaf. As inflation continues to squeeze middle-class budgets and basic air travel becomes increasingly unaffordable for many Americans, the carrier is heavily investing in luxury accommodations for those who haven’t felt the economic pain. The redesigned 787-9 cabin will feature 51 “Flagship Suite” seats, a significant increase from the previous 30-seat configuration – clearly showing where the airline’s priorities lie. Meanwhile, the rest of us are left fighting over overhead bin space and paying extra fees for everything from checked bags to choosing a seat.
A $5,361 Ticket Price That Rivals Monthly Mortgage Payments
If you thought airline tickets were already expensive, brace yourself. A roundtrip ticket from Chicago to London in one of these luxurious Flagship business class suites will set you back a staggering $5,361. That’s more than many Americans’ monthly mortgage payments or what some families spend on groceries in half a year. The inaugural flight takes off on June 5 from Chicago O’Hare to Los Angeles before continuing to London Heathrow, with additional routes planned to Philadelphia, Zurich, and even Australia.
“Later this summer, American will also operate the new 787-9 from Philadelphia (PHL) to LHR and Zurich (ZRH). Flagship Suite service will go down under this fall with service from Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) to Brisbane, Australia (BNE)” – American Airlines
The airline plans to roll out 30 redesigned 787-9s by 2029 as part of a broader strategy to increase lie-flat and premium economy seating by 50% by the end of the decade. Two new Boeing 787-9 planes have already arrived in the fleet. American is clearly betting big on catering to wealthy travelers who can still afford luxury experiences despite the economic turmoil affecting most Americans. It’s remarkable how airlines always seem to find money for premium cabin innovations while claiming they need to charge extra for basic services in economy.
The Full Royal Treatment While Regular Passengers Fight for Basic Comforts
As if the private suites weren’t enough, passengers who shell out for these premium accommodations receive the full royal treatment from start to finish. Benefits include priority check-in, security, boarding, and baggage handling – essentially paying to skip all the inconveniences the airlines themselves created. These elite travelers also gain access to American’s exclusive Flagship Lounge, complete with complimentary regional dishes and handcrafted cocktails, while the rest of us fight over $15 airport sandwiches and $9 bottles of water in the terminal.
Once aboard, these premium passengers enjoy multi-course meals paired with award-winning wines, luxury amenity kits with high-end skincare products, and premium bedding featuring a comfortable duvet with a dual-sided pillow. Meanwhile, in economy, passengers increasingly have to pay for seat selection, checked bags, and even carry-ons with basic economy fares. American’s move follows similar premium cabin enhancements by Delta and JetBlue, showing that while inflation may be crushing the middle class, the luxury travel market is apparently booming. It’s yet another reminder of the growing divide between America’s elite and everyone else.
