Another Celebrity Makes Good on Their “I’m Leaving America” Promise
In what might be the most unexpected benefit of President Trump’s reelection, it appears we’re finally seeing celebrities follow through on those tired “I’m leaving America” threats they’ve been making since 2016. Courtney Love, widow of Kurt Cobain and frontwoman of Hole, has decided that the United Kingdom is now her permanent home of choice. The singer, who has been residing in London since 2019, is actively pursuing British citizenship to formalize her exit from the United States during Trump’s second term. At least one celebrity is keeping their word – that alone might be newsworthy.
Love didn’t mince words about her motivations, describing the current Republican administration as “emperor-core” – whatever that means – and expressing her apparent terror at the thought of returning to the constitutional republic that made her wealthy and famous. Because nothing says “I’m oppressed” quite like having the means to just up and move to another country when an election doesn’t go your way. Meanwhile, everyday Americans dealing with real problems like inflation and crime don’t have the luxury of country-hopping when they’re unhappy with political outcomes.
The Celebrity Exodus Nobody Asked For
Love joins an increasingly predictable parade of entertainment elites who seem incapable of sharing a country with people who think differently than they do. Ellen DeGeneres and her wife Portia de Rossi have reportedly left the United States, feeling “disillusioned” by the election results. I’m sure their feelings are deeply hurt by the democratic process not delivering their preferred candidate. The horror of living in a country where elections sometimes don’t go your way – it’s almost as if that’s exactly how republics function.
“I’m really glad I’m here. It’s so great to live here. I’m finally getting my British citizenship in six months. I get to be a citizen. I’m applying, man! Can’t get rid of me!” – Courtney Love
Meanwhile, Rosie O’Donnell has reportedly relocated to Ireland with her child, citing concerns over equal rights in America. “When it is safe for all citizens to have equal rights there in America, that’s when we will consider coming back,” O’Donnell stated, apparently unaware that Ireland’s abortion laws were more restrictive than many U.S. states until just a few years ago. But why let facts get in the way of a good virtue signal? The irony of fleeing to predominantly white European countries to escape America’s supposed oppression seems completely lost on these self-proclaimed champions of diversity.
Promises Actually Kept
Remember the endless parade of celebrities who swore they’d leave if Trump won in 2016? Whoppi Goldberg, Amy Schumer, Lena Dunham, Miley Cyrus, and dozens more all threatened to pack their bags – only to mysteriously remain in the supposedly unbearable United States for the entirety of Trump’s first term. At least Love, DeGeneres, and O’Donnell are actually following through this time, which might be the most honest thing they’ve done in years. Perhaps they’ve finally realized that empty threats don’t carry much weight when repeatedly unfulfilled.
“When it is safe for all citizens to have equal rights there in America, that’s when we will consider coming back” – Rosie O’Donnell
While these celebrities flee the country that made them rich and famous, millions of immigrants continue risking everything to enter America illegally. It’s almost as if the United States remains the land of opportunity despite what Hollywood elites claim. Perhaps Love and friends could take a moment to reflect on that irony as they seek citizenship in countries with stricter immigration policies, more homogeneous populations, and far less tolerance for the progressive ideologies they champion. But self-awareness has never been Hollywood’s strong suit, has it?
