In a surprise move, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D–NY) labeled the country’s Supreme Court a “MAGA Supreme Court,” after the court’s unanimous ruling against the Environmental Protection Agency and the Biden administration.
The ruling, which drastically cut back the federal government’s overreach, was made up of a 9 – 0 decision—a sterling display of judicial unity. In response, Schumer wrote on Twitter: “This MAGA Supreme Court is continuing to erode our country’s environmental laws. Make no mistake—this ruling will mean more polluted water, and more destruction of wetlands. We’ll keep fighting to protect our waters.”

Dan McLaughlin of National Review summed up the absurdity of Schumer’s attack on the Supreme Court.

Justice Kavanaugh, who Schumer has previously threatened to wreck “havoc” on if he took an unfavorable ruling, criticized the Court’s decision saying that “by narrowing the act’s coverage of wetlands to only adjoining wetlands, the court’s new test will leave some long–regulated adjacent wetlands no longer covered by the Clean Water Act, with significant repercussions for water quality and flood control throughout the United States.”
Remarkably, two of the liberal justices on the court also joined a concurring opinion—likely to the chagrin of certain Democrats who are actively trying to shift the Court to the Left.
Democrats hoping to let the American people know this ruling was somehow “illegitimate” and dangerous wanted to brand any ruling against their agenda as a “MAGA” extremist — even if those individuals are liberal members of the Court.
Schumer’s attempts to smear each and every judicial ruling that does not go his way isn’t a new strategy. “I want to tell you Gorsuch, I want to tell you Kavanaugh — you have released the whirlwind, and you will pay the price,” he said in an outcry at the Supreme Court in 2020.
His comments weren’t taken kindly by Republicans. “Schumer‘s attack warps reality to ensure that no Supreme Court decision can ever be accepted as legitimate by the public without his Marxist stamp of approval,” tweeted Rep. Chip Roy (R–TX.)
It appears that Schumer is also employing this same tactic in the present, as demonstrated by his labeling of the Supreme Court’s unanimous ruling as a “MAGA Supreme Court.”
Interpretation of the law should be done based on the rule of law—not politics. Unfortunately, Schumer’s statement this week only serves to inflame and distort the truth. It does not appear that he intends to back down from his scaremongering tactics anytime soon.
